Why Is an Oil Change Important?
Oil serves as a lubricant for your car’s engine, reducing friction between moving parts and preventing damage. Over time, the oil breaks down and becomes less effective, resulting in increased friction and potential engine damage. Regularly changing your car’s oil will ensure that the engine stays properly lubricated and functioning at its best.
What Parts Are Used in Pumping Oil Around the Engine?
Oil Pan
This is the reservoir that holds the oil in your car’s engine. It is located at the bottom of the engine and has a drain plug for easy removal of old oil.
Oil Pump
The oil pump is responsible for pumping oil from the pan to the various parts of your car’s engine that require lubrication.
Oil Filter
The oil filter removes impurities and debris from the oil as it flows through the engine. It is essential to replace the filter during an oil change to prevent buildup and potential damage to the engine.
How to Check Your Car Oil
- Park Your Car in a Level Area. Before checking your oil, ensure that the car is parked on a level surface to get an accurate reading.
- Wait Until Your Engine Has Cooled Down and Settled in the Engine. It is important to check your oil after the engine has had time to cool down and settle in the oil pan. This will give you a more accurate reading.
- Locate the Dipstick. The dipstick is usually yellow or orange and has a circular handle for easy removal.
- Pull Out the Dipstick and Wipe It Clean. Remove the dipstick and use a clean cloth or paper towel to wipe away any oil on the stick. This will give you a more accurate reading.
- Reinsert the Dipstick Fully. Make sure that the dipstick is inserted all the way back into its tube.
- Pull Out the Dipstick Again and Check the Oil Level. The dipstick has markings indicating how much oil is in the engine. You have enough oil if the oil level is between the two markings. If it is below the lower marking, then you need to add more oil.
- If You Need to Add Oil, Unscrew the Cap on Top of Your Engine. Add a small amount at a time and check the level again until it reaches the appropriate mark.
- Replace the Dipstick and Close the Hood. After adding or checking your oil, make sure to replace the dipstick and close the hood securely.
When to Get an Oil Change?
Different car manufacturers have varying recommendations for oil change intervals based on their specific engines and driving conditions. However, a general rule of thumb is to get an oil change every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first. It is always best to consult your car’s manual for the recommended interval.
